03.24.10 - Fibria regrets incident followed by death in Bahia state

Fibria regrets to inform that an incident that occurred on March 17th on the company's land at a location called Nova Brasilia, municipality of Mucuri, in southern Bahia State (Brazil), led to the death of one of the persons involved.

According to a report made to the police by Garra, the security company that provides services to Fibria in that region, one of its teams allegedly surprised a group of people that were removing wood from an area belonging to the company. Upon being asked to leave the area, some members of the group allegedly reacted aggressively and provoked a conflict, which unfortunately led to the death of Mr. Henrique de Souza Pereira.

Fibria’s contract with Garra determines that the latter performs surveillance of the company’s forestry areas and equipment in Bahia, and in the event of anything untoward, shall register the incident with the local police, who shall conduct the necessary investigations.

Garra’s employees are authorized to carry arms, which should be used only in extreme circumstances, for their own protection. During 2010 alone, 102 occurrences of theft of wood from forest plantations have been registered at the local police stations with no serious incidents reported .

Fibria deeply regrets the loss of a life and, just like all of the local community, deems it to be a priority that the full facts of the case be ascertained by the police. The company has placed itself at the disposal of local authorities and will fully cooperate with them to clarify this lamentable incident.

Fibria also wants to reiterate its concern, already expressed to the state authorities, over the growing climate of insecurity prevailing in some locations of the south of Bahia, which is to a great extent caused by the growing scale of occurrences of wood theft from forestry companies operating in the region. Measures need to be adopted that may re-establish safe conditions for the local population and provide the necessary environment for the local social and economic development based on a collaborative process of construction involving all stakeholders.
