06.29.10 - Fibria’s Piracicaba Unit wins award
The company’s environmental education program reaches out to more than 7,000 children in state schools.
Fibria’s Piracicaba Unit (SP) has just been awarded the 12th Environmental Prize, in the company category, by COMDEMA (Piracicaba Municipal Council for Environmental Protection). The winning project is that of the NEA – Center for Environmental Education – which has been running for seven years now. The initiative was developed to provide orientation for the company’s internal public and was subsequently extended to include the local community and state school system. More than seven thousand children have already participated in the program.
The Piracicaba NEA operates on the company’s premises. When it was first introduced, teachers and educational advisors were asked for suggestions regarding a program of monitored visits by children within the industrial installations. The teachers recommended the participation of children in the 5th grade, when the environment is a top priority in the school curriculum.
During their visit, the children are informed about the uses and importance of the River Piracicaba, both to the industry – which uses its water in pulp manufacturing – and in sustaining the ecosystem. The native and eucalyptus forests are also given prominence, along with a description of the entire pulp and paper production process. The tour of the unit takes in the effluent treatment plant and the laboratory where analyses are carried out, so that they can understand the cycle of the water within the mill, until it is treated and returned to the river.
Despite its success with the children, the NEA retains its focus on environmental education for the company’s employees. Every month, specific activities are held for the internal public, such as exhibitions, arts festivals, games, talks relating to the environment, and the donating of seedlings, and it is also a place where employees can go to examine the NEA’s collection of materials on the subject.
