07.20.10 - Adventure in the Mar de Dentro helps to build environmental awareness

Launch on the 20th of an illustrated book and CD aimed at disseminating the preservation of nature among children.

Pelotas - A little girl from Porto Alegre is going to visit her grandmother in the south of the state, in a region known as the Mar de Dentro, together with her father and brother. On the journey she discovers a whole new world and has some adventures as she protects endangered creatures from hunters. Irene also makes a new friend, the little boy João, and is enchanted by nature as she comes across a variety of different animal species, such as the coypu or nutria. This story, Adventure in the Mar de Dentro, can be enjoyed in illustrated book format or heard on CD, which are being launched on Tuesday, July 20th. This is an initiative of the Brazilian Service for the Support of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (SEBRAE/RS) and is sponsored by Fibria and the Votorantim Institute, under the terms of the Ministry of Culture’s Rouanet Law.

The event starts at 6pm, at the Pelotense Public Library (Praça Coronel Pedro Osório, Pelotas/RS) and is open to the public. The story, focusing on environmental preservation, was written by the journalist Maria Emília Kubrusly, while the illustrations are the work of Lui Lo Pumo, and the voices on the CD are those of artisans participating in the Mar de Dentro Handicrafts Project, an activity developed by SEBRAE/RS and supported by the national organization (SEBRAE), the Agency for the Development of the Costa Doce Region and Fibria (the company formed by the merger of Aracruz Celulose and Votorantim Celulose e Papel). The company Lahtu Sensu Administração Cultural is responsible for the administration and rendering of accounts of the initiative.

This educational material draws attention to the fauna of the Mar de Dentro region, extending from Guaíba to Chuí, which comprises the world’s largest lagoon complex, formed by the Laguna dos Patos, Lagoa Mirim and Lagoa Mangueira. It is one of Brazil’s most important ecological sanctuaries, containing a wealth of fauna and flora.

“Our activity is impossible without sustainability, and that is why we identify with and support the project. In additional to concern about professional training and income generation, there is a strong desire to adopt a creative approach to the matter of conserving biological diversity”, Fausto Camargo, Fibria’s Sustainability manager, explained.

Set up in 2006, the SEBRAE/RS project promotes vocational training and entrepreneurism among groups of artisans in the south of the state. This year, the Bichos do Mar de Dentro (Creatures of the Mar de Dentro) group was included in the federal government’s National Program for Culture (PRONAC), and received funding from the Fibria and Votorantim Institute amounting to R$ 200,000, under the Rouanet Law. A total of 56 entrepreneurs from Arroio Grande, Camaquã, São Lourenço do Sul, Pelotas and Rio Grande, helped by designers, have developed and produced lines of toy stuffed animals, wooden and ceramic miniatures, embroidery and tapestries, among other items, all based on wild creatures that inhabit the Costa Doce region. To date, 26 species are represented, in more than 200 different types of item, including herons, owls, capybara or cavy, anteaters, lapwings, swans, tanagers and cardinals.

The Pelotas artisan Aurea Ávila tells us she was highly motivated by the experience, the tremendous effort made by all those involved and the returns that it will yield for the group. “Children and their parents will be won over by the importance of the environmental cause and, equally important, our own community will get a better idea of the work that we are doing, as a result of this pedagogical method”, she affirmed. In her view, this is an incentive for the group to continue growing. Aurea participated in the recordings, providing sound effects. Before this, the artisans had participated in music awareness workshops, under the conductor Sérgio Sisto, where they learned voice exercises, theater and body language. The CD soundtrack was created by the musician Guilherme Tavares, who teaches guitar and harmony at the Music Conservatory of the Pelotas Federal University (UFPEL).

On the CD, in addition to the 26 minutes of the story, narrated by the artisans, there is information about the project and photos of the creative workshops and of the Creatures of the Mar de Dentro products. For SEBRAE/RS administrator Jussara Argoud, this production is the realization of a goal that they have had since the beginning of the project. “The main objective is for children to get to know and help protect the fauna of the lagoon region and the Taim Ecological Station. But the educational content will also interest adults, thereby helping to spread the Word about the region and about the group of artisans. It is a stimulus for us to develop the idea further and augment the sales of the collection”, she told us. She added that three thousand books and CDs are ready and will be distributed among the municipalities that are participating in the initiative, as well as to state public libraries and the project team, to be taken to fairs where handicraft products are sold. “Furthermore, through the Personnel Management area, the material will be distributed to all SEBRAE/RS collaborators who have children under 10 years of age, which is the target population of this production”, she pointed out.
