02.02.12 - Fibria closes 2011 with net revenue of R$5.85 billion and an EBITDA margin of 34%
The company’s operational performance brought record production and sales volumes, despite the difficult global scenario
São Paulo - Throughout 2011, Fibria followed its announced strategy of strengthening its operational performance and focusing on the pulp business. To this end, the company sold its paper business assets: CONPACEL, KSR and the Piracicaba Unit. In relation to 2010, Fibria’s latest results showed a decline, due to the 9.6% reduction in the average net pulp price denominated in reais and the exchange rate volatility seen during the period. The loss of revenue from the Piracicaba Unit (which was sold in September) was also reflected in the company’s figures.
With its focus on operating efficiency and productivity gains, the company attained record production and sales volumes in 2011, selling more than 99% of the 5.2 million tons of pulp that it produced. In the fourth quarter alone, sales amounted to 1.4 million tons – 12% higher than in the same period of 2010. The net revenue for the year amounted to R$5.85 billion, 7% less than in 2010. The pro-forma EBITDA (excluding the results of CONPACEL and KSR) came to R$1.96 billion, with a margin of 34%. The EBITDA in the fourth quarter was R$390 million.
The appreciation of the US dollar against the real, as from September, led to an increase in the company’s debt in reais, since 92% of the debt is denominated in foreign currency. However, this is merely an accounting effect, with no impact on the cash position, and the company’s exposure to the dollar debt is fully in line with the export-related protection strategy. The foreign exchange impact caused a net loss of R$1.9 billion in the fourth quarter and was the main reason for the net loss of R$868 million for the year.
Nevertheless, the company’s financial soundness in backed by a R$1.84 billion cash position as at December 31, 2011 – equivalent to 1.6 times the short-term debt, leaving no doubt as to the capacity to honor its commitments in 2012, which represent just 10% of the total debt. The average debt maturity at the end of 2011 was 73 months. The company’s net debt was down by 3% in comparison with the previous year, at R$9.48 billion. As a precautionary measure, in view of the prevailing uncertainty of the world macroeconomic scenario and consequent exchange rate volatility, in December Fibria renegotiated contractual covenants in relation to a portion of its bank debt, without incurring any additional interest.
During 2011, Fibria managed to fulfill, three years ahead of schedule, its goal of deriving roughly R$4.5 billion (at net present value) of synergies resulting from the founding of the company. Among the chief gains were the increased production arising from the implementing of best practices, the renegotiating of contracts with suppliers, and the optimized use of chemicals and energy, which along with other measures strengthened the company’s cost control and minimized the impact of inflation.
In 2012, Fibria is maintaining its focus on its Competitiveness Project, seeking to generate value, reduce costs and increase productivity. The gains in operating efficiency obtained last year through, among other things, the modernization of the pulp bleaching line at the Aracruz Unit’s Fiberline A and expanded use of the management model for leased areas, have helped to reduce the CAPEX for 2012, in relation to that of the previous year, thereby freeing up resources that can be used to amortize the company’s debt and strengthen its liquidity.
Sustainability
In 2011, for the third year running, the company has been selected for the BM&FBovespa Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE) and the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World – 2011/2012 portfolio – and is, for the second time, the only wood and paper sector company to be included in the BM&FBovespa Carbon Efficient Index (ICO2). Fibria’s inclusion in the aforementioned indexes is a clear reflection of the company’s strong commitment to sustainability and sound corporate governance.

- Fibria concludes its strategic repositioning, focusing on its core business, pulp
- São Paulo – The third quarter of 2011 was marked the conclusion of Fibria’s strategic repositioning exclusively in the core business of pulp and the forestry base. Despite macroeconomic challenges with the real’s depreciation against the dollar, the Company’s stable pulp production and sales in the period demonstrate the strength of the Company’s decision. The sale of its last paper asset, the Piracicaba Unit, to OJI Paper helped maintain the Company’s cash and liquidity position.

- Fibria’s income at R$215 million in 2Q11O
- São Paulo – In 2Q11, Fibria’s net income reached R$215 million, 66% up the same period in 2010. The 13% dollar depreciation in the period caused the pulp price in reais to retreat 12%, which directly impacted Fibria’s net income, from R$1.6 billion in 2010 to R$1.4 billion in 2Q11. The decreased revenue was offset by the Company’s improved financial results, which rose from a R$310 million loss in 2010, when the dollar appreciated 1% to R$277 million gains at the end of 2Q11, due to the 4% dollar depreciation in the period. Net income for 1Q11 was directly benefited by the sale of CONPACEL and KSR’s assets.
