09.03.10 - Fibria announces liberation of funds for indigenous communities in Aracruz (Espírito Santo State)

The company will pass along R$ 1.8 million to be used to implement projects that contribute to the development of the indigenous communities

On September 2 in Brasilia, the National Indian Foundation (FUNAI) and representatives of the indigenous communities of the municipality of Aracruz (Espírito Santo State) signed a Term of Commitment calling for the disbursement on the part of the company of R$ 1.8 million to the Tupinikim and Guarani Indigenous Association (AITG) and the Tupinikim Indigenous Association of Comboios (AITC).

The funds will be used to prepare and implement projects that were called for by the ethnic-environmental study conducted in the villages, which are designed to contribute to the sustainable development of the indigenous communities. The application of the money passed along by Fibria will be through the AITG and the AITC.

The Term of Commitment is one of the developments of the Conduct of Adjustment Agreement (TAC) signed December 3, 2007 that ended a long-standing land dispute between the company (then Aracruz) and the indigenous communities. The TAC called for the demarcation on the part of FUNAI of 11,000 hectares of land as indigenous territory — which was carried out in 2008 and subsequently incorporated into the existing indigenous land in the region, which until then had totaled 7,000 hectares. Moreover, the company committed to disbursing R$ 1.2 million to meet the needs of the community — which also occurred in 2008 — by financing an ethnic-environmental study conducted by an organization nominated by the Indians and by FUNAI, concluded in May 2010, and also to support with funding of up to R$1.8 million the projects that derived from this study.

The R$ 1.8 million to be passed along by Fibria will be distributed among the seven villages represented by AITG (Caieiras Velhas, Irajá, Areal, Pau-Brasil, Três Palmeiras, Boa Esperança and Piraquê-Açu) and the village represented by the AITC (Comboios). It will be the responsibility of the Tupinikim and Guarani Managing Council (comprised of representatives of the villages and FUNAI) to provide oversight regarding the use of the money.

“The signing of this Term of Commitment represents the effort of the company to find a sustainable solution for the indigenous communities. We hope that the projects to be implemented will make significant contributions to the development of the villages,” said Fibria president and CEO Carlos Aguiar.
